Ch.9 Redesign

Concept redesign of the Channel 9 app by and for developers and technical enthusiasts

Overview & Goal
Community app hosting video channels, discussions, podcasts and interviews. Goals were an increase of total reach, percentage of return users and increase in content consumption, as well as user engagement.


Strategies to reach Objectives

Two main strategies to achieve the goals were to enhance the Channel 9 live experience and the on-demand experience.

Enhance the ch.9 LIVE experience

  • Give visibility to the live events ch9
  • Improve the Live admin experience
  • Improve the conversation tool used during live events

Enhance the ch.9 on-demand experience

  • Subscribe feature: encourage the ch9 user to come back
  • Recommendation engine based on user’s activity: a step to a personalized experience
  • Enhance the search for a better browsing experience
  • Finish what you have started feature: a step to a personalized experience

Current App
The current app is a little outdated and lacks the features needed for achieving the goals. Also, the desktop app is not consistent with the Xbox application.



Redesign

The development of the designs were postponed, but I continued working on concepts for xbox and desktop. One of the challenges was working with low quality imagery directly from the site. The 10 foot experience is different from the desktop experience because the focus is on entertainment and relaxed content consumption making user interactions as simple and efficient as possible.

On the other hand, the desktop experience allows for much more in-depth information consumption and exploration with the freedom a mouse or touchscreen offers. Also, choosing a dark theme made sense as this was primarily a video consumption app which needed to be consistent with the Xbox version.
